and what to do instead
We all have hopes and dreams for the future – who we want to become, what we want to achieve, experiences we’d like to have, relationships we long to create.
The truth is: hoping and dreaming is not an effective strategy.
Fifteen years ago, I did what so many people do.
I set New Year’s Resolutions.
Eat healthy! Save money! Exercise more! Get organized!
I failed every time.
I know I’m not alone.
It’s so common, there’s a day dedicated to it.
On January 14th, we all will cross into Quitters Day – the day when most people are likely to give up their resolution.
Because I was so disheartened and disillusioned with the experience of resolutions, I dove into the psychological literature around why resolutions don’t work, and what works better.
From there, I developed a three step process for consciously designing lives we love.
- Reflect. Unless you consciously choose otherwise, the best predictor of the future, is the past. In order for life design to be truly transformative, it’s important to engage in self-reflection to make course corrections. Where have you been? Who have you been? What worked? What didn’t work? What are you proud of? Where do you want to go from here?
- Release. Once you have teased apart what needs to go and what can stay, the next step is to consciously release thoughts, patterns, habits, labels, and experiences that are no longer serving you. What worked for you then, might not work for you now. There are things you’ve outgrown, experiences you don’t want to carry anymore, patterns you’re ready to release. When you let go of the old, you create space for the new.
- Redesign. Say Hello! to your bright future. The final step is to create an actionable roadmap for the life you love. What are the habits, intentions, goals, rules, relationships, and experiences that are aligned with your deepest desires for the year ahead?
This Life Design process is grounded in science and infused with soul.
You can dive into it on your own using the three steps above or join me and a handful of good humans as we do it together for our one-day virtual life design retreat on January 2nd.
This might just be the perfect experience to support you in sailing past Quitters Day feeling like a success (however you define it to be).
Please take this journey with us, we’d love to support your Fresh Start.
Let’s set you up to be aligned with the life you love, no matter what life throws your way next year.
